The U.S. House of Representatives will likely soon vote on an updated version of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) – a date has not yet been released. To prepare for a vote, please contact your members of Congress to ask them to protect access to affordable, quality healthcare coverage and OPPOSE the AHCA and the MacArthur amendment.

MS lasts a lifetime, and available treatments and supports are often unaffordable for many people, even with health coverage. While improvements to the healthcare system are needed, the American Health Care Act would be a step backwards—shifting more of the cost of coverage and care to individuals, families and state governments, making comprehensive health insurance coverage inaccessible and unaffordable for millions of people. Furthermore, the AHCA could eliminate critical protections including prohibitions on lifetime and annual caps on benefits and annual limits on out-of-pocket costs. The Macarthur amendment to the American Health Care Act would further erode protections for people with pre-existing conditions by eliminating national standards regarding essential health benefits, and protections including prohibitions against lifetime and annual benefit caps and limits on out-of-pocket caps.

Specific concerns include:

  • Shifting the burden to the states;
  • The loss of coverage by more than 24 million people by 2026;
  • Phasing out Medicaid expansion and changing Medicaid’s financing structure to a per capita cap;
  • Elimination of Essential Health Benefits;
  • Allowing a 5:1 ratio of premiums for older enrollees and
  • Repeal of cost-sharing subsidies.

Urge your U.S. Representative to oppose the AHCA and the MacArthur amendment today.
